At Beck, we believe that every child deserves the gift of reading. Our school is full of amazing books! However, we desire to expand our selection of books to include high-quality decodable books, which provide both research-based and evidence-based support for emerging readers. Decodable texts promote self-confidence and independence to practice newly acquired phonics skills. These texts are similar to training wheels on a bike, providing a scaffold to transfer skills to more complex and authentic texts. Our decodable readers would be available for all teachers to utilize in the classroom with students, particularly in grades K-3. The impact of these new sets of decodable texts would be immense, as hundreds of children would benefit from their accessibility and use. Our project idea would provide access to brilliantly crafted, beautifully illustrated decodable books to be used as fantastic practice for students who are learning to read.
