As a first grade teacher, I see every day how essential fine motor skills are for everyday tasks such as writing and cutting. Over the past 12 years, I have noticed students' fine motor skills are weakening, to the point of students struggling with basic handwriting or cutting a straight line. Students need to strengthen their fine motor muscles in their hands and wrists in order to improve their fine motor skills. This impacts so many academic areas...writing, math, even reading, since students are required to write written responses to questions. Not only does this benefit my students, but it benefits them in future grades as well. I plan on using fine motor bins in the morning, and for our "Fun Friday" end of the week activity. Students will have the opportunity to work with theraputty, playdough, sensory materials like sand and rice, tweezers, and tongs to strengthen those fine motor muscles in their hands and wrists.
