Our students are enrolled in a project based STEM lab where they select problems to study and create real-life solutions. Living in the Great Lakes State means our students need to become stewards of conservation of waterways. Students will be collecting data at Belle River Park about the health of the river which is a tributary to the St. Clair River. They will test the river's levels of nitrates, dissolved oxygen, pH & phosphates. Additionally, students will collect macroinvertebrates that are specimens that indicate the overall health of a river. They will analyze their data to determine the overall health of the river. They will identify areas of concern and develop an action plan to improve the waterway. This engaging experience will provide the students a chance to see how peopleâs actions (use of fertilizers, handling waste, how we treat roads, etc.) affect local natural resources.
