As a 5th grade teacher at Immaculate Conception, I implement the outdoor activities in my classroom as much as possible. We read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and Brianâs Winter. These books are about a teenaged boy who must survive in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash. In these books we learn about survival, outdoors skills, and so much more. I have found that learning about outdoor skills helps students problem solve and be great thinkers. Part of how Brian survives is through archery. A skill many students have never experienced. It is my hope that we can use this program with our 4-8th grade students. Through this program we will teach archery, problem solving, and get physical movement into the studentâs day. We are working to purchase a kit through the Michigan DNR that would include bows, arrows, targets and other archery equipment.
