Bringing Social Studies to Life
Boulan Park Middle School
Social studies is often taught as an abstract concept. Students learn much better when they are able to interact with the content directly. When students are able to hold artifacts or experience things in real life they are much more likely to retain what they learn. Grant money will be used to purchase hands on materials. Examples from past classroom purchases include uncleaned Roman coins used when teaching about archaeology and the spread of the Roman Empire, reproduction Greek hoplite armor for teaching about the Greek phalanx and pieces of the Berlin Wall along with Soviet military hats for teaching about the fall of the Soviet Union. Historical artifacts can bring content to life in a way video clips and textbooks can never hope to match.
